BeReal social app, the new Kingpin in town!

BeReal social app emphasizes honesty and encourages users to be themselves. Because the app allows everyone to publish once per day, users can avoid being on the app for many hours. This distinguishes the app from the social media sites that now dominate the area. In 2022, it has proven to be a leading competitor in the industry with millions of downloads worldwide. Many people’s everyday lives are centered on social media.

According to the Digital 2022 April Global Statshot Report, there are 4.65 billion social media users on the planet. That equates to 58.7% of the world population, with many adopting social media as their primary source of information.

The year 2020 altered nearly every aspect of our lives, including socializing. Social distancing has become a common aspect of our lives. It created a void for the customized communication that we used to have in person. Nonetheless, humans are flexible. In the last year, several new social networking sites have emerged to recreate the communities we’ve had to forsake abruptly.

What is BeReal and how does it work?

BeReal is a French social media app that was launched in 2020 and created by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau. After a few years of relative obscurity, it exploded in popularity in early and mid-2022.
Its major feature is a daily notice that prompts users to share a photo of themselves and their surroundings. This happens within a randomly selected two-minute window each day. Critics remarked on its emphasis on authenticity, which some believed crossed the line into banality.

BeReal is available in both Google Playstore and Apple store

It became popular in early and mid-2022 and spread quickly on college campuses. By April, the app had more than 6.8 million downloads, with the majority of the downloads occurring in 2022. In August 2022, it became Germany’s top downloaded. It got a $30 million fundraising round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Accel in April 2022. The social app received $85 million in a fundraising round led by Yuri Milner’s DST Global in May 2022. This raised its valuation to around $600 million. The app had over 20 million projected global installs as of July 2022. As of August 25th, the application had over 10 million active daily users.

How BeReal Social app works

BeReal alerts all users at the same time once per day that a two-minute posting opportunity is open. It requests that users generate a post (dubbed a “BeReal”). It utilizes mandatory simultaneous photographs from both the front and back cameras. This provides a visual depiction of what they are doing at the time. The given window varies from day to day and is unknown to users before receiving the notification.

While on-time BeReals display the time of upload, late BeReals uploaded after the two-minute window display simply the poster’s lateness. Other users can also see how many times the poster attempted to take the BeReal, as well as their position at the time the BeReal was taken. Users only get one chance to remove their BeReal and re-post it, and they cannot upload more than one at a time. BeReal also has a “Discovery” section where users may share their discoveries with a much larger, public audience. This function, however, is limited in that users cannot interact with the posts through comments, as opposed to the ‘My Friends’ section.

It has been compared to Wordle, which gained popularity earlier in 2022, due to its daily cycle of involvement. BeReal has been defined as a competitor to Instagram that de-emphasizes social media addiction and overuse. The program does not provide photo filters or any photo editing, and there is no advertising or follower count. The company’s marketing material warned that the program “may be addicting,” but also stated that “BeReal won’t make you famous.”

In comparison to Instagram, BeReal is more focused on sharing amongst acquaintances and is positioned as a more intimate and private social practice. Because the program lacks an explicit image filtering method, users are free to share objectionable photos. There is, however, a report tool that allows users to report a photo or another user who is sharing inappropriate content.

Some users often publish after the two-minute warning period has expired, prompting some criticism of the program, as the ability to post late compromises its authenticity goals. With BeReal’s popularity, Instagram debuted a “Dual Camera” function similar to BeReal in July 2022, and in August 2022 began testing a similar feature dubbed “IG Candid Challenges,” in which users are pushed to post once a day within two minutes.
