A 32-year-old woman is nursing gunshot wounds at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital after a confrontation erupted between her and Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip. This took place at Kanu Grounds in Nanyuki town, Laikipia County.
“Joy Makena, aged 32 years was shot [sic] on her right leg above the ankle after a quarrel ensued between her and the senator Lamu county Hon. Anwar,” part of the police report read.
The officers launched investigations, visited the scene, and recovered a firearm with 13 bullets from Senator Anwar’s security detail.
Media reports indicate that Anwar said he was attacked at the hotel in Nanyuki and was forced to shoot in the air to scare his attackers.
“I am at a hospital for some checkup and will speak on the matter later, but the truth is that I was attacked by a knife-wielding gang last night,” he said
Police said the lawmaker’s whereabouts are yet to be established and that Makena was in stable condition.
Later in the day Onesmus Towett, the County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) for Laikipia, said the police received a call at about 2.00 pm from members of the public.
“We established that the senator had already traveled to Nairobi but we called him and he told us that he had been confronted by two women and a man and that he shot in self-defense,” said Towett.
Towett said the Senator had informed police that he had also been injured in the incident and was seeking medical attention in Nairobi.
Ngirici opens up on her deteriorating relationship with Ruto
The entry of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru into the United Democratic Alliance(UDA) has created a rift between the party and Kirinyaga Women Rep Purity Ngirici.
Thursday, November 25, Ngirici expressed regret for funding UDA to the tune of millions.
Kirinyaga Women Rep Purity Ngirici regrets that despite all the sacrifices, the party seemed to support her rival Governor Waiguru.
“I don’t even want to remember how much I have used to build the UDA party in Kirinyaga from scratch, but I’m young in politics and still learning,” Ngirici stated.
Waiguru’s defection to the UDA party, in Ngirici’s opinion, has ‘opened her eyes.’
“I popularised UDA Party in Kirinyaga County. I convinced my people that UDA was the political outfit to join, and that Ruto was the man best-suited to take over from [President] Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
I also made them see the gaps in BBI, which was being championed by the President’s team,” she said.
“During that time, Waiguru was on the other side opposing Ruto, claiming that the DP had rented members of the Kikuyu community.
She was also at the forefront popularising BBI across Kenya,” said Ngirici.
She expressed confidence that her supporters will follow her, regardless of the party she will be vying on.
Governors And Cabinet Secretaries Skip Ruto Meeting
Deputy President William Ruto held a meeting of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) which was attended by nine governors, one Cabinet Secretary, and Two Principal Secretaries.
The meeting was held on Monday, November 22 where DP Ruto has invited five Cabinet secretaries and the Council of Governors.
Unfortunately, only Devolution CS Charles Keter showed up from Cabinet.
County chiefs were represented by Council of Governors Chairman and Embu Governor Martin Wambora, Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Prof Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu).
Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Stanley Kiptis (Baringo), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Prof Paul Chepkwony (Kericho), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), and Dr. Barchok Hillary (Bomet).
Controller of Budget Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o, Chairperson of the Commission for Revenue Allocation Dr. Jane Kiringai, PS Treasury Dr. Julius Muia, PS Devolution Julius Korir, and County Executive Committee Members were also in attendance.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the ODM’s Deputy Party Leader, had previously indicated that he would not attend the meeting, citing Ruto and Raila’s animosity.
“I will not be present…The battle lines have been set, and each person must stay in their designated lane. Raila Odinga has my complete support,” he said in a November 14 interview.
The first county to do so since devolution began when the council approved Laikipia County’s request to borrow nearly Sh1 billion from the international market.
The meeting also approved a Sh370 billion allocation to counties.
Governor Anne Waiguru joins DP Ruto’s UDA
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has officially ditched Jubilee party to joins Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Waiguru met Deputy President Wiliam Ruto at his Karen residence in Nairobi on Tuesday morning during a closed door meeting where she made the move.
Governor Waiguiru allayed she made the decision based on her constituents’ needs saying, “I cannot be ignorant and not listen to the people. I can’t vote myself in, I am listening to what they want,” she said.
The kirinyaga county governor was accompanied by a section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) during her visit to the deputy president’s residence.
Addressing a roadside gathering at Thiba area in Mwea, Kirinyaga County on September 22, the county chief posed“What party do you want me to join? she asked, to which they chanted UDA. “If I join that party will you re-elect me? Let me see by a show of hands”
Upon Kirinyaga governor joining UDA she will have to face Kirinyaga women representative Purity Ngirici in the nominations who is also in the UDA party and declared her intentions to vie for governor’s seat.
She acknowledged that the Jubilee party was no longer an option because it had lost its popularity.
“The truth of the matter is that defending my seat, if the polls were held today, would be very difficult, and that is the truth of the matter, Jubilee needs to look internally at its issues in order to be acceptable to the people of Mt Kenya.
“If I ran today on a Jubilee ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I had performed, it would be hard to convince them to vote for me,” she said.
