UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, England. … The band’s line-up was stable for nearly 29 years, from March 1979 until January 2008, when frontman Ali Campbell left the band, followed shortly thereafter by keyboardist Mickey Virtue.

The song was released in 1983 under the album (labor of love). The song is more about life, how you have been licked, washed up for years and you merely survive because of your pride.

Secret inside many rivers to cross

The original founder of the song is Jimmy Cliff. The song was released in 1969 under the album named Jimmy Cliff.

James Chambers OM (born 30 July 1944), known professionally as Jimmy Cliff. Cliff is a Jamaican, rocksteady, reggae and soul musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and actor.

Just into his teens, Cliff began recording soon after moving from the countryside to Kingston, making several singles before topping the Jamaican charts with his own composition, “Hurricane Hattie,” one of his earliest efforts for Leslie Kong’s Beverly Records.

below are lyrics;

Many Rivers To Cross

Many rivers to cross
But I can’t seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of DoverMany rivers to cross
And it’s only my will that keeps me alive
I’ve been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride and this loneliness won’t leave me alone
It’s such a drag to be on your own
My woman left me and she didn’t say why
Well I guess, I have to try many rivers to cross
But just where to begin, I’m playing for time
There are times I find myself
Thinking of committing some dreadful crimeYes, I’ve got many rivers to cross
But I can’t seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover
